DGL

DGL "Darn Good Licorice"

Uses: Heartburn Peptic ulcers Hiatal Hernia
Indigestion Colitis and Crohns
Ulcer prevention (long term aspirin or nsaid use)

Mechanism: DGL increases the quality and quantity of the mucin which protects the cells lining the stomach and digestive tract.

DGL increases the blood supply to and lifespan of the stomach cells.
DGL is composed of several flavinoids which have been shown to inhibit H.Pylori.
DGL does not increase blood pressure as the glycyrrhetinic acid component that leads to sodium retention has been removed.

Drugs such as zantac, tagamet or losec which decrease acid production will inhibit digestion and absorption, as stomach acids are needed to breakdown food.

Note: DGL can be used with other heartburn medications.

Licorice is the most commonly used herb in Chinese medicine.

Dosage: chew 2 to 4 tablets 10-15 minutes before meals. Typically symptom relief occurs within 2 weeks. Continue treatment for 2-4 months.
